Christian Outmatches Dreamer in Extreme

Dreamer challenged Christian to an Extreme Rules match for his ECW Title Rematch. The question was not whether Dreamer would regain the title, but how extreme would the match be?

Tommy Dreamer, as most know, was a part of the original ECW – a.k.a. the real ECW, as Joey Styles would often say, “This is Extreme Championship Wrestling, there is no substitute!” – so the issue of whether the match would be extreme would not be if Dreamer could handle it, but whether Christian could?

Christian may not seem like much because he’s not built like the other wrestlers, but he was a part of the first three TLC matches and contributed to the creation of the Money in the Bank Ladder Match – all very intense matches.

Prior to Night of Champions, Christian mocked Dreamer – Are you going to take me to the extreme? And Dreamer responded – If I did, you wouldn’t be here next week.

Dreamer’s ECW was a lot more violent than WWE’s version of Extreme. Household items provided by the audience members were used as weapons. And some matches didn’t even take place in the ring, because it was about doing things that were never done before, and if a few gallons of blood was spilt along the way, more power to them.

It was a revolution of what pro-wrestling should be – people were piledrived and body slammed into concrete. When WWE announcers state that the superstars are being slammed into concrete, it’s padded - But in ECW there was no such thing as padded floors.

So when Dreamer replied – If I did [take you to the extreme], you wouldn’t be here next week – he wasn’t kidding. But in the realm of the WWE, where the violence has been controlled in the confinements of the padded barricades, a guy like Christian can be made to be Extreme.

The match had promise as Christian entered the arena with a car door and Dreamer had a hotdog cart. The two broke out fighting, using kendo sticks, trash cans, and crutches. A crutch is strong enough to support a limp person and to have that break over a person – now that’s hardcore.

Some of the action took place on the entrance tamp where Tommy drop toe hold Christian into the hotdog cart – It was a thing of beauty.

Tommy even side slammed Christian into trash cans, threw him into one, and placed him in the tree of woe – crushing the aluminum can, covering his face, with a kendo stick.

The car door really served no purpose seeing as Dreamer struck Christian with a trash can top – But Christian prevailed by executing the Killswitch over the car door, then using the weight to keep Dreamer down for the 3-count.

The match delivered where it counted in innovation – and was a great title defense for Christian, seeing as you can’t be the ECW Champion without knowing how to be extreme!

The rivalry between Christian and Dreamer has been a personal one – with Christian prevailing over Dreamer in the birthplace of ECW and now in Extreme Rules – which to Dreamer is a regular pro-wrestling match.

With Dreamer spending his rematch clause, who will step up to challenge the ECW Champion?

It has been a long time since there has been a good Extreme Rules match. It was awesome! Maybe Christian can pull it off again with some up and coming challengers.

Turns out, Dreamer was struck with the butterfly screw of the crutch into his tricep. Talk about Exreme! And Dreamer was pleased with this match, because it was a reminder of the glory days of ECW.
