John Morrison Strikes Gold; Mysterio 30-Day Suspension is in Effect

Last week, the news hit WWE.com that Rey Mysterio was suspended for 30 days - But what of the Intercontinental Title? And why, if Mysterio was suspended, were they still advertising an IC Title match for Breaking Point against Dolph Ziggler? Well... wwe.com mentioned that his suspension would take effect on Sept. 2nd - the day after the Sept. 4th edition of Smackdown is tapped.

This could only mean one thing... they were going to have Mysterio drop the title to Dolph Ziggler, right...? WRONG! Instead, they dropped the title to John Morrison.

John Morrison is now a 3-time Intercontinental Champion - 2 of which he held with the Johnny Nitro gimmick and feuded with Jeff Hardy as a heel. Now this is the first IC title reign, not only as a face but as John Morrison.

Not more than 3 weeks ago, Morrison was battling Jeff for the World Heavyweight Championship - it's a damn shame that he is forced back into the IC title scene.

The only positive note is that now Morrison returns to the pay-per-view scene. The last time Morrison appeared on pay-per-view was back in April for Wrestlemania 25 - and he wasn't even a part of the televised event, except he was short changed and lost the World Tag Titles to the Colons in a dark match.

Morrison will indeed put the title on the line against the #1 Contender for the IC Title, Dolph Ziggler at the Breaking Point ppv.

Now... Mysterio has been politicking with the WWE about keeping the IC title - which explains how Ziggler keeps getting short changed. However, word has gotten around that Ziggler was indeed going over at the following ppv - finally winning the title from Mysterio. Yet, things have changed now, and the Guru of Greatness now holds the gold.

I do give Mysterio a lot of credit, sure he's in trouble with the WWE, not only for failing a drug test for the Wellness Policy, but also for complaining to a Mexican news station about how unfairly WWE's charges are against him; but, despite all that he gave a hell of a match.

Morrison and Mysterio put up a match for the ages. The two are two of the most innovative high flyers on Smackdown and the two know how to put on a match.

Many close calls and the crazy maneuvers - a hurricanrana that traveled around Morrison twice, a standing Shooting-Star Press, a Flying Chuck Kick, and a 619 - it all seemed unreal.

Never, has the IC title been defended like a WWE Title then this match, it's one - in my opinion - that stole the show.

And I give Mysterio credit because last year, when Jeff Hardy was suspended for 60 days, he was forced to drop the IC title to Chris Jericho. Instead of putting on a heck of a match - Jeff and Chris lose touch of wrestling and pretty much have a brawl in the ring - and the titles then switched hands. Jeff didn't carry himself well, but Mysterio somehow did, despite all the heat he's been getting from WWE and the eventual fine.

Congrats on John Morrison on being the new Intercontinental Champion - hopefully he'll bring credibility back to the title and hopefully he retains at Breaking Point.
