Now how did this gimmick start? Simple, on the Dirt Sheet. After Hawkins and Ryder won the WWE Tag Team Titles at The Great American Bash 2008, they parted ways from Edge, Chavo, and Vickie. But sadly, in their first title defense against the Colons they lost the titles. Afterwards they didn't appear on television much, but would make guest appearances on John Morrion and The Miz's Dirt Sheet, as Zack Ryder would scream out WOO WOO WOO!
Who would've guessed that those three words would blossom into a gimmick? The man comes out in half trunks/half pants with a headband and sunglasses. Who could take the guy seriously as a competitor?
Ryder's aggressiveness in the ring and living the role makes him believable. Even on his twitter account he mentions how he's going to get Zacked at the Gym. Ryder acts like a champion every time he sets foot in the ring and after the Battle Royal on Tuesday night, he has a chance to get the ECW Championship.
The second match of the night, Ryder faced off against Yoshi Tatsu and failed to subdue his opponent with the Zack Attack (Leg Lariat Takedown), and instead lost to Tatsu's Roundhouse Kick.
The Battle Royal would determine the next contender for Christian's ECW Title, minus William Regal who was banned from competing since he's had two title opportunities.
The Royal used every male wrestler on the ECW roster, including having to use Ryder and Tatsu again to create a full Royal. Now, this was the best ECW main event that we have seen since the Fatal Four-Way to determine Mark Henry's Title.
Only in the WWE can you start the night with a loss, but end the night as a winner.
It hasn't been set when Ryder will face off against Christian for the ECW Title - possibly at Hell in the Cell ppv - but last night on WWE Superstars, Zack, acting as guest commentator, scouted his opponent, who had an impressive victory over Paul Burchill.
Zack Ryder is a gimmick that grows on you, but one thing is for sure - that this title match encounter will be one Hell of a match.
